10 Rock Stars Who Didn't Like Their Most Famous Songs
2. Kurt Cobain - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Kurt Cobain always had a certain difficulty with Nirvana's fame. From the time the band took over MTV with their landmark record Nevermind, Cobain spent much of the press tour lambasting the production of the record, claiming it was far too polished than he thought it should be.
Of all the tracks on the record, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is the one song in particular that made Cobain's skin crawl. When going into detail about the track, the singer said that he was just ripping the classic alternative sound of the Pixies and somewhat failing. Even though he was still proud of his artistic achievement, a lot of his compliments of the record were backhanded, as if to say the band got their big break by diluting their initial punk rock ethos.
While Cobain thought he found a remedy by getting the mixer of Slayer's best albums to mastermind the board, what ended up being produced was, in Cobain's words, "closer to a Motley Crue record than a punk album." On the other hand, "Teen Spirit" has been praised over the years as the song that kickstarted the alternative movement and became the disaffected rallying cry for Generation X. Cobain may have been trying to hold onto his punk rock street cred by bashing his work, but he missed out on one of the greatest songs the 90's would ever produce.
