10 Scariest Videos In Rock Music History

1. Prison Sex - Tool (1993)

We include a trigger warning with this particular entry. It deals with the troubling theme of abuse.

Lead singer of Tool, Maynard James Keenan, is known for the somewhat reclusive way in which he conducts himself, rarely engaging with the media or public unless it's during a live show. Similarly, he has always been fairly protective over his lyrics, originally not including printed versions with Tool's albums.

Although over the years he has released the majority of his lyrics online, the meaning and connotations behind them are often ambiguous in their origins, as Keenan rarely shares aspects of his personal life.

Unless you're dealing with Wallace and Gromit, stop-motion is just creepy. But in this case, it's down right disturbing. The video depicts a humanoid alien creature who has imprisoned a smaller doll-like creature, reminiscent of a Tim Burton character from The Nightmare Before Christmas. The video shows interactions between the two, mostly the manipulation of the doll's movements by the predatory alien character.

In 1996, Keenan explained that the song is about recognising how abuse manifests.

Given the lyrical content and the symbolic suggestions that the video connotes, it's mad to think this video was aired on MTV back in the day. It's an incredible piece of art, that deals with one of the most ugly aspects of society, but it certainly isn't easy viewing.

MTV would ultimately pull the video after a number of complaints.
