10 Scottish Bands You Need To Listen To
2. The Jesus And Mary Chain
If you find yourself with a little too much happiness in your life, then you're going to want to listen to moody punk band The Jesus And Mary Chain.
Originally going by the names The Poppy Seeds and Death Of Joey, the band was formed in East Kilbride by brothers Jim and William Reid in 1983. Inspired by the likes of punk bands The Stooges and Siouxsie And The Banshees alongside 1960s pop groups The Beach Boys and The Shangri-Las (the drums in their track 'Just Like Honey' even borrows the iconic beat from The Ronettes' 'Be My Baby'), the brothers combined these contrasting flavours to create their own distinctive sound that's since been immortalised in their 1985 debut album Psychocandy.
Following the release of their sixth studio album Munki in 1998, however, the band went their separate ways before reuniting in 2007, releasing their latest album, Damage And Joy, ten years later.
Still touring today, The Jesus And Mary Chain has found a permanent home within pop-culture, with their track 'Just Like Honey' featuring in Lost In Translation and 'Taste Of Candy' appearing in indie comedy Adventureland.
