10 Singers Who HATE Their Own Songs
6. Beastie Boys - Fight For Your Right
For over three decades, this track has been a mainstay at frat parties, but that wasn't what the Beastie Boys intended.
When the group wrote Fight For Your Right, they intended the song as a satire of frat boys and parties, not as a party song itself. Unfortunately for them, that message didn't come through to most listeners. Its irony was lost on them, and it became popular for all the wrong reasons.
The song become a party anthem, embraced by the very people they were they were taking a jab at, and the group resented the song because of it.
According to the song's Wikipedia page, Mike D had this comment on the tune's popularity.
The only thing that upsets me is that we might have reinforced certain values of some people in our audience when our own values were actually totally different. There were tons of guys singing along to Fight for Your Right who were oblivious to the fact it was a total goof on them.
