10 Songs That Are Darker Than You Realize
9. When the Sun Goes Down - Arctic Monkeys
As far as garage rock goes, lyrics that make sense aren't exactly a #1 priority. Since most of these guys are just learning how to play their instruments, you'll be lucky if you get a song that actually makes a little bit of sense at the best of times. It seemed like Alex Turner knew that though when writing When the Sun Goes Down...by taking us to the deepest depths of the underground.
Starting off pretty sunny with just a few pretty guitar chords, the main riff of the song throws us into the mean streets of England, where we see street urchins peddling for money on the streets and danger lurking around almost every corner. In a sense, this song almost fakes you from the beginning, starting off all bright and sunny before stomping on your dreams and bringing you the hellish reality that the Monkeys go through every single day.
Though we do eventually get a return to the happy sounding song at the end, the storyline isn't resolved, leaving us to believe that this object of Turner's affection is either trapped in this hellscape or dancing a little too close to the flame. It may seem like a nice place...just be sure to keep your guard up come nightfall.
