10 Songs That Emotionally DESTROYED Artists
1. Here Today - John Lennon
After the breakup of the Beatles, it felt like John Lennon and Paul McCartney really did hate each other. Since they had written some of the biggest rock and roll songs of all time, their decision to move on came with a lot of baggage, including songs where they flung insults back at each other. It’s a different story when your musical soulmate passes away though, and Paul had a lot on his mind going into making Tug of War.
While most of the album was meant as Paul’s first solo album outside of Wings, the loss of his old friend was weighing heavy on his mind, causing him to write a song that was framed as a sort of goodbye message to his musical soulmate. While Here Today does acknowledge that not everything was rosy between the two Beatles, Paul prefers to remember the good times here, when all they wanted to do was write songs and sing together.
With George Martin coming back to produce the track, the whole song feels like a spiritual sequel to Yesterday, where Paul thanks John for coming into his life and saying that he will always love him no matter how bad the sparring sessions got. There may have been loads of legal business that came between the two Beatles, but nothing can break that brotherly bond that they had from the beginning.
