10 Songs That End On Cliffhangers
1. Mortal Man - Kendrick Lamar
When Kendrick Lamar dropped the phenomenal Good Kid Maad City, it quickly went down in hip hop lore as one of the most inventive concept albums to come out of the genre. Though the album's themes were tied up beautifully across the record, the album To Pimp A Butterfly brought even more golden cuts while leaving fans with an ominous final note.
After coming to terms with his fame throughout the album, "Mortal Man" arrives with Kendrick asking his audience if they will still stay by his side even if something outlandish were to happen to him. As the track goes on, it then devolves into a spoken word interlude after which Kendrick asks a question seemingly into the void.
Instead of continuing, the voice of Tupac Shakur answers Lamar, after which the two start having an incredibly thoughtful conversation about gang violence and race relations in America. The ominous ghost of Shakur finally talks about oppressed city kids getting fed up and eventually trying to overtake the rich by sheer force of will. Lamar then counteracts Shakur's claim with a poem describing how a hustler from the streets can overcome adversity while staying true to themselves. When Lamar asks for perspective on his writing, Shakur falls silent, finishing the album with Lamar's questions unanswered and the fans in stunned awe.
