10 Songs That End On Cliffhangers
2. Don't Stand So Close To Me - The Police
The Police's lyrical themes were always more off-the-wall than their contemporaries in the new wave scene. Instead of being about a relationship gone sour, "Don't Stand So Close To Me" is a very creepy dive into forbidden romance.
The whole song revolves around a teacher who gets blatant sexual advances from one of his female students. While being quick to dismiss his student, the rumors start to spread among the rest of his classroom, with many other students getting jealous of this girls' supposed "special treatment."
The paranoia of this teacher doesn't end after class, with our hero having to give his stalker a ride to school one day. Things eventually find their way to the teacher's lounge with the man's colleagues accusing him of having a fling with this girl.
Rather than finding refuge somewhere else, all Sting can offer up as a solution is the same chorus of "Don't Stand So Close To Me." Maybe these uncomfortable situations is something our hero will have to endure, or maybe he could be framed for raping one of his pupils. Either way, this song is one of the Police's darkest compositions due to the fact that this disturbing scenario is left without finality.
