10 Songs That Prove Wings Are A Better Band Than You Think
2. Daytime, Nighttime Suffering
The story goes that finding themselves in need of a b-side, McCartney set his Wing’s band mates a challenge. They would have a songwriting competition.
Every band member would write a song and the best one would be recorded as the b-side to Goodnight Tonight. More than just a bit of fun, this was a chance for someone to pick up lucrative songwriting royalties on a hit single.
So, each of them went home for the weekend and diligently wrote a song. When they got back on Monday, much to everyone’s surprise, the winner was Paul McCartney!
There’s no record of whether the others saw this as a lovely bonding experience or a massive waste of their time and effort.
Still, if Paul felt he needed the friendly competition to spur him on it was worth it. Daytime Nighttime Suffering opens on a radiant burst of acapella harmonies before settling into one of Macca’s best melodies. Paul himself has repeatedly cited this one as a personal favourite.
