10 Songs That Started Hard Rock
9. Kick Out The Jams - MC5
Anyone who wanted a good slice of rock and roll in the 60's more often than not found what they were looking for from the British Invasion bands. However, something ever nastier than the blues was happening in the industrial town of Detroit.
Armed with guitars and a ton of attitude, the MC5 launched onto the music scene with a sound that would eventually be dubbed as garage rock. Guitarist Wayne Kramer knew that what the band needed was a much more visceral approach to their style to make them stand out amongst their peers. Instead of the more pristine style of production you would get from contemporary rock acts, the band toughened up their guitar parts to make them nastier for the audiences who wanted something more than just bluesy jamming.
In a sense, "Kick Out the Jams" is not only a kickass song from the band, but also a communal war cry used by the members of the Detroit scene. From the opening shout to its freewheeling rhythms throughout, the song sounds like it's about to fall apart but never falters as one of rock's most unruly creations. After the MC5, the stupefying sounds of hard rock music became much more uninhibited.
