10 Songs That Started Hard Rock
8. Search And Destroy - The Stooges
While the MC5 were making waves in the local scene with their garage rock call to arms, something even wilder was happening on the other side of Detroit. Coming together to form a heavier rock act, the Stooges took to the stage looking to start a war through their performances.
When the band were at their strung-out peak, the release of "Search and Destroy" left rock listeners invigorated and parents horrified. Starting with a nasty guitar riff from James Williamson, this track was rock and roll as told by a street urchin. Vocalist Iggy Pop's lyrics were soul-stirring, with messages having to do with the manufactured aspect of kids going to war. Pop's off-the-wall performance of the song during live shows earned him the reputation as one of the strongest frontman in rock.
Even though it may have seemed a bit too heavy for some at times, the song became the lynch pin for what would become known as punk rock later down the road. "Search and Destroy" may not have had the plaintive beauty of something like Simon and Garfunkel, but there was a certain X-factor to the music that spoke to the more animalistic side of your brain.
