10 Songs That Were Painful To Make
1. Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
A lot of people forget that when you're an artist, pain can show itself in a lot of different ways. Aside from the casualties that you sustain both on tour and in the studio, the very nature of writing these songs can be emotionally draining, especially if it's about someone you're fairly close to.
So, when they actually show themselves in the flesh, it can be slightly surreal trying to keep up your morale.
During the production of Wish You Were Here, Pink Floyd were already becoming desensitized after the massive success of Dark Side of the Moon, with the memory of Syd Barrett still looming over their head. Dedicating this entire album to their former bandmate, Floyd were dealt a bit of a surprise when they were paid a visit by Barrett himself while working at the sessions.
This was not the same Barrett that they had grown up with though.
Since the psychedelics and other medications had taken their toll on his body, Barrett was practically a shell of what he once was, not even saying too much while in their presence before going back into seclusion. Even talking about it later, Rogers Waters and David Gilmour still don't know what to make of the whole thing, almost like Barrett was a spirit rather than an actual presence. Then again, that's the nature of rock and roll, isn't it? You can play as much music as you want, but that doesn't mean you're safe from the Ghosts of Rock's Past.
