10 Songs That Were Painful To Make
2. Blood Sex and Booze - Green Day
Whenever you talk about strange topics in your music, you always have fans speculating whether or not it's actually true. Let's face it, how many still think that Billie Joe Armstrong masturbates 12 times a day based on what we heard in Longview?
Granted, while things have been a lot cooler in terms of Blood, Sex, and Booze, the construction of the tune was a lot more rough than you might expect.
Coated in references to S&M, the band really made it a point to emphasize the sleazy nature of the whole track, down to Billie Joe sounding like he's begging to be whipped as the song plays out. You need to set the tone for this kind of thing, though, and Tre Cool knew just the way to do it by calling in a favour. Being familiar with some dominatrix workers in the area, Tre called one of them down to the studio and had them provide their services with the microphones on.
Though none of the band members can claim to have actually gotten beaten, the same couldn't be said for one of their engineers, whose voice can be heard at the very start of the track getting whipped in the middle of the studio.
As much as this was supposed to be the more mature version of Green Day being shown to us, this was still an indication that that slightly sleazy spirit was still in there somewhere.
