10 Songs You Know From The First SECOND
1. One Week - Barenaked Ladies
The pop music scene in the '90s had a weird character all its own. Whereas you can definitely identify the more cheesy aspects of the material on the '70s charts or the synthetic goofiness of the '80s, the era of irony had songs that were as wacky as they were endearing.
Even with all of the more outlandish acts that were too weird for the charts, Barenaked Ladies caught the mainstream's attention with just two words.
There have been plenty of great opening lines throughout the history of pop music, and as strange as it sounds, One Week is definitely among the all time best. You may think that something like Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen or Let's Go Crazy by Prince set you up for something huge, but you know exactly what you're going into when you hear the first utterance of "IT'S BEEN."
This is one of those opening lines that does its job so well that it doesn't even matter what comes next, which is almost creepy when you think about it. Despite the rapping sections about making films with samurais and Sailor Moon, that hook line is one of the few in the history of pop that both catches you off guard and excites you in one go.
One Week is still dorky as all hell after all these years, but this special kind of goofy deserves its place up in the musical heavens.
