10 Terrible Rock Songs By Legendary Rock Bands
3. Maver - Stone Temple Pilots
At the turn of the '00s, Stone Temple Pilots were really starting to lose their momentum a little bit. After being one of the few punching bags during the grunge movement, they actually managed to stick it out and get more interesting after grunge faded, only to lose the plot due to Scott Weiland's drug issues. Though it looked like a break and Scott's stint in Velvet Revolver might smooth things out, we were not prepared for what we got on the self titled record.
As the band has gotten older, a lot of these songs start to feel a bit meandering and tired at the worst of times, almost like they're trying some new sounds out of necessity. That kind of thing might have been forgivable for a band that's been in the game for this long, but what the hell can you even call something like Maver? From the sound of it, it feels like they were going for a smooth country song to close out the album, only with a super basic understanding about how that genre operates.
With the guitars just plodding away in the background, all we're left to grab onto is Scott's voice, which is so gravelly and dorky that it almost comes off like a parody of what someone thinks a country artist is supposed to sound like. This may have just been a little bit of humor at the end of the album, but considering everything is played straight, where the hell is the joke?
