5. Father John Misty - Covers Of Ryan Adams Cover Of Taylor Swift In The Style Of The Velvet Underground
Before Ryan Adams’ alleged sexual misconduct allegations, he was last in the media spotlight for covering Taylor Swift’s 1989 album to moderate success. Rival Joshua Tillman (better known as Father John Misty) out-indied Adams, and saw it as mainstream pandering.
Seizing an opportunity to have the last laugh, Misty decided to cover Adams' covers with an added twist. If you can get your head around this, Father John Misty covered Ryan Adams' rendition of Taylor Swift's Blank Space in the style of The Velvet Underground. Peak satire.
The low-fi quality of recording adds to the troll-like nature of this musical matrix, it is hard when listening to not stifle a chuckle. Misty’s impression of Lou Reed's drawl is brilliant. Anyone fancy covering this?
Blank Space was released for free in 2015, as opposed to Adam's making money from his cover songs. Misty would later eclipse Adams in recognition with the release of the critically-acclaimed album God's Favorite Customer in 2018.
