10 Underrated Albums By Legendary Bands

8. Aftermath - The Rolling Stones

By the time the late '60s got underway, the Rolling Stones were in the midst of a transitional period. While they started out as these pop-tinged rock and roll bad boys, their later records like Sticky Fingers and Let It Bleed would feature rootsy playing and a more adult approach to their songwriting. As with all transitions though, the albums in between tend to be a mixed bag.

At the same time, Aftermath was a noble attempt by the band to progress their music further. This album tends to only get brought up for its hits like "Under My Thumb" and "Paint It Black", but that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this album's experiments. Tracks like "Lady Jane" show a more trance-like chord pattern while "Goin' Home" stretches a straightforward blues jam into an 11-minute journey.

This album also shows the start of the more dark songwriting topics on "Mother's Little Helper", which is a sad eulogy for a housewife who becomes addicted to over-the-counter energy pills. The seasoned bluesmen aura of the Stones wasn't operating at full capacity just yet, but this album shows a step in the right direction from adolescence to more adult pain.
