10 Unusual Music Collaborations That Should've Never Worked
5. Christina Aguilera & Redman - Dirrty
This song was EVERYWHERE in the early 2000s, especially in the UK. Somehow it only managed to get to number 48 on the Billboard 100 chart in America, but reached number 1 in the UK. It’s a certified banger and God only knows why the Americans didn't realise this.
This was the moment Christina Aguilera asserted her intention to completely change her public image and persona. No longer the cute and safe teenage pop idol, she had transitioned into an assertive, edgy and sexually liberated woman. This is essentially the original Wrecking Ball. Looking back on it, it makes complete sense why such a gritty rapper like Redman was featured on the song.
Both Christina and Redman’s lyrics live up to the title. It’s dirty, it’s gritty and it’s catchy as hell.
This set the precedent for the rest of her career. Now Christina Aguilera has dipped her toes in everything from jazz and funk, to soul and of course hip hop. Not only is this one of the most iconic songs and music videos of the 2000s, it’s also extremely underrated as a musical trailblazer.
