Most of the artists that we've seen thus far have normally been the same type of metal that most people expect from the genre. Can't we just get something a little more complicated than just the regular guitar solos and pummeling riffs? Never fear though when you have an act like Dream Theater yielding new music on the horizon.
Compared to the other prog rock titans of the genre, Dream Theater has remained one of the most unstoppable forces in music. Even after something as catastrophic as losing someone like Mike Portnoy, the band have soldiered on beautifully and are even taking a few wild left turns on albums like The Astonishing. Now that they've gotten a record like Distance Over Time under their belt, there's no telling what we're in for with A View From the Top of the World.
From the sounds of singles like the Alien, we're going to be in for another trippy ride, with John Petrucci having a field day behind the fretboard and trading jaw dropping moments with Jordan Ruddess and John Myung. Considering how much material they already have to work with, it's amazing that we even have a band like this who can keep the prog epics rolling. Although some haters might call something like this flashy, it's certainly not a bad thing when it still kicks this much ass.
