2. Brighten - Jerry Cantrell

You can really count on one hand how many times Jerry Cantrell has really struck out on the musical front. Compared to other grunge acts of his day, there aren't too many who were able to rebuild their band from the ground up like Cantrell, bringing together some of the greatest metal albums of the past decade with Alice in Chains like Black Gives Way to Blue. Flying solo though, Cantrell has the potential to impress us all the same with Brighten.
And this isn't just some songs that have been Alice B-sides or anything either. From the sounds of a song like Atone, Jerry seems to be digging into an almost outlaw country mold. Before any of you metalheads go running though, it looks like Jerry is cribbing from the likes of Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash, only bringing in his trademark darkness that comes with all of his songs.
It's not like this is a new thing though. The songs off of Jar of Flies were never too far away from country, so this is an opportunity for Jerry to try on something different while still staying true to what he loves to do. This might not be considered on the same level as an Alice record or anything, but it definitely has that same spirit.
