10 Worst Hard Rock Lyrics Of The ‘80s
7. Shout At The Devil - Motley Crue
Motley Crue was one of the reasons why the Sunset Strip blew up the way it did. With the perfect combination of theatricality and hooks, albums like Too Fast For Love and Shout at the Devil became classics in the scene and planted the seeds of hair metal. Though the title track of Shout at the Devil is an absolute banger, there’s one line that brings everything to a grinding halt.
Aiming to be a mix between menacing and sexy, this song has the right amount of swing to get anyone moving. Though the band have the menacing aspect down to a tee, things get far from sexual when Vince Neil sings “he’ll be the blood in your eyes, he’ll be the blood between your thighs.” If you’re going for something that will come off as sexy, bringing up someone’s menstruation cycle is probably not the best way to go about it.
The worst part about this line is that people actually fell for it. Though songwriter Nikki Sixx never claimed for it to be a sexy song, it ended up taking on a life of its own, with fans that were more concerned with mingling with groupies than digging into lyrics. There’s a lot of sure-fire classics in Motley’s catalogue, but for just a moment, things went from sultry to uncomfortable in no time flat.
