10 Worst Music Lyrics Of The '80s

8. The Police - De Do Do Do

Given the amount of repetition of the title in most Police hits, it would be reasonable to assume that words weren't the band's strong suit. That assumption is borne out by more than the evidence of 'De Do Do Do'. Allowing for the fact that there is a certain amount of self-deprecation in the line, 'It's meaningless and all that's true' coming after, 'De doo do do, de da da da is all I have to say to you', there are plenty more where that came from.

'Do Do Do Do' does have one other couplet of dubious taste in, 'When their eloquence escapes you, their logic ties you up and rapes you'. But let's move on to check out a few other pieces of evidence for the prosecution. 'Walking on The Moon' a song of few lyrics, contains a particularly unpoetic couplet in 'I hope my leg don't break, walking on the moon'.

There are few things more irritating than when a songwriter tries to show off their literary knowledge. Here, from 'Don't Stand So Close to Me' we get, 'He starts to shake and cough, just like the old man in that book by Nabokov'. Yes Sting, 'Lolita', we get it.
