10 Worst Songs On Classic Albums
8. Holier Than Thou - Metallica
There tends to be two distinct camps of Metallica fans when talking about their self-titled Black Album from 1991. For as many people laud it as one of the greatest metal releases ever conceived by man, many of the OG thrash fans felt burned by seeing one of their favorite bands soften up at the hand of Bob Rock. However, if the thrash fans had had their way, we could have gotten one of the most generic flavors of Metallica ever made.
Across the track listing, Metallica show a lot of different sides of themselves, from the pained balladry of The Unforgiven to the exotic instrumentation coating Wherever I May Roam. Though Holier Than Thou does bring us back to the familiar thrash roots of the band, it's easily the most milquetoast cut on the record, with other thrash offerings like Through the Never wiping the floor with it on the back half.
There's actually a lot of interesting writing in the lyrics referring to someone's demonstrative ways, but even James Hetfield himself has proclaimed that this song felt a bit forced in retrospect. Adding insult to injury, this was actually expected to be the hit first single from the album before Lars Ulrich eventually convinced his bandmates to release Enter Sandman instead. While this crossover may not have been the most glorious Metallica album, we definitely dodged a bullet not having this song as the face of the thrash legends' new vision.
