10 Worst Songs On Classic Albums
4. Six Shooter - Queens of the Stone Age
At the start of the '00s, it seemed like the rock world had lost its edge. With pop punk and nu metal stars making their way across MTV, there wasn't really any new and interesting bands demanding to be heard across the radio. Once Songs For the Deaf came along though, the rock world was taken on a slow journey through the seedier sides of California.
Across this stoner rock classic, Joshua Homme basically paints a picture of what it's like to live the rockstar lifestyle, with Dave Grohl annihilating the drumkit behind him. While Homme isn't alone in his endeavors, Nick Oliveri's contribution with Six Shooter didn't really need to happen. From a technical standpoint though, this makes a ton of sense, with the radio dials shifting to a death metal station. However, this hardcore punk detour from the rest of the record just pulls you out of the haze that you've settled into across tracks like the Sky is Falling.
Compare this to something like Mark Lanegan's Hanging Tree, which works as a nice pick-me-up coming out of the Sky is Falling rather than this punk-addled freakout. While not the worst thing in the world, this serves as a bit of a cautionary tale for other bands when putting together an album listing. You may love the song with all your heart, but context matters.
