10 Worst Times Hard Rock Bands Changed Singers
2. Van Halen
In most fan's eyes, there are two forms of Van Halen...the classic David Lee Roth fronted era and the "Van Hagar" era. There is however, a third era that is often forgotten about from the late 90's.
After falling out with Roth, then Hagar, then Roth again, Van Halen recruited Gary Cherone of Extreme to be the third frontman. They immediately got to work on 1998's Van Halen III. While they scored another #1 spot on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart, the album was ultimately a commercial and critical failure.
The group went on a massive world tour in support of III and returned to work on another album with Cherone in '99. The project never saw the light of day as Cherone would step away from the band citing "musical differences" although surprisingly it is said that there was no animosity between the two parties as had been with Hagar and Roth.
Cherone moved on to other projects while the Van Halen brothers have re-united with both Hagar and Roth to differing levels of productivity, stability, and drama.
