11 Songs With Hidden Meanings
9. The Beatles - Martha My Dear
Martha My Dear is featured on The White Album, released in 1968. Most people would not second guess the meaning of this Beatles’ song. It seems to be about a woman named Martha with whom John Lennon had a connection.
However, Martha was actually Lennon’s beloved sheepdog, which passed away at the age of 15 in 1981. There are some subtle hints in the lyrics, such as “hold your head up you silly girl, look what you’ve done”.
Additionally, it is rumored Lennon had a second inspiration: his ex-fiancée Jane Asher. Not long before he wrote the lyrics, Asher cancelled the wedding on account of his infidelity.
