A Smith's fan favourite and critical darling 'How Soon Is Now' is one of the band's most enduring hits. With its delayed, psychedelic riff, it captured the attention of fans everywhere. But, it started as the other track on the 'William, It Was Really Nothing' 7" in 1984. Eventually, when the song began to make waves, it was released as a single in 1985. The song is frequently listed as one of the great songs by music critics; number 7 by NME on 50 Greatest Anthems Ever and in the Top 10 in its 500 Greatest songs of all time and number 477 in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of all time. Sire Records chief Seymour Stein even called it 'the Stairway to Heaven of the 80's'.
