5. The Sharpest Lives - My Chemical Romance

When The Black Parade was released upon the world in the mid-2000's, the forcefulness behind the songs grabbed your attention from the start. In one fell swoop, My Chemical Romance turned a sad concept about a dying cancer patient into a desperate plea for life whose musical construction was fueled by a Queen-level sense of grandeur.

Though the singles were incredibly arranged, MCR still maintained their status as a rock band first and foremost on "The Sharpest Lives." This tune is one of the punkiest on the record, from its twisted guitar effects to the brilliant drum performance from Bob Bryar. Gerard Way's approach to the lyrics is an interesting foray into the Patient on his last legs, as he asks for more medication that could possibly bring about an overdose. It could end his life in an instant, but the idea of being free from the pain is too good to pass up.

For all of the album's dark themes, "The Sharpest Lives" is a tragic look into the warped mind of a man willing to do anything to just be numb. Delivered with rock and roll gravitas, this track has all of the twisted menace of The Black Parade concentrated in just over 3 minutes.
