12 Greatest Hard Rock Frontmen Of The '90s
9. Shannon Hoon - Blind Melon
By the end of the 90's, it seemed that any band being labelled as alternative was getting a deal. From the pop tendencies of Bush to the nu metal stylings of something like Limp Bizkit, record labels seemed to be throwing money at any band despite looking at the quality of their music. At the start of the decade though, one man ended up fading from view before he saw his star rise.
As soon as he stepped up to the mic, Shannon Hoon was almost poised to be a rockstar, with songs like "No Rain" with Blind Melon setting him up nicely. Even before jumping into the alternative sphere, Hoon already had his foot in the door when he accompanied his good friend Axl Rose to the studio to share vocal duties on "Don't Cry." He seemed to have the rock world at his feet, but that didn't mean he was bulletproof.
Just as Blind Melon was about to return to their tour, Shannon was found in his bunk unresponsive, having died of a heroin overdose a few hours before the band's next show started. Though Shannon may not have found the success he rightly deserved, his timeless songs have made him the Great Rock Frontman Who Never Was.
