12 Most Hated Classic Rock Songs (On Great Albums)

9. Meat Is Murder - The Smiths

The Smiths set the standard for alternative rock in the early 80's. Along with bands like R.E.M. and the Cure, the songwriting team of Morrissey and Johnny Marr took all of the great tropes of rock music and made them hit much closer to home. Though the Queen is Dead is heralded as the band's best effort, their sophomore effort Meat is Murder is not too far behind.

Tracks like "The Headmaster Ritual" and the groundbreaking single "How Soon Is Now?" have left their mark on countless acts going today from AFI to Radiohead. However, the title track that closes out the record feels a bit too lethargic for its own good. The Smiths have always been able to back up their downtempo material with some of the most cutting lyrics the rock world had ever heard, but Morrissey's musings about the horrid nature of the beef industry makes you feel like you're being lectured rather than making a connection with the singer.

This was just one of many examples of Morrissey bringing up his more controversial opinions in the rock world, which has gotten him in hot water with the press on many occasions. Meat Is Murder is an absolute essential for any fan of 80's music, but you should proceed with caution once you hit that final track.
