14 Phenomenal Bands To Watch Out For In 2014

9. Savages

Savages are an all-girl post punk band originating from London, and are creators of what was quite possibly the most intense and interesting rock album of last year. Sounding like the apocalyptic lovechild of "Siouxsie and the Banshees" and "Sonic Youth", the band's debut "Silence Yourself" is nothing short of brilliant. From the bass-heavy intro of opening track "Shut Up" through to the wailing guitar present on "No Face", the album grabs you and keeps you held in its grip until its very final moments, where you can be guaranteed you'll want to hear it again straight away. What makes this intriguing is the fact that, fitting with the punk genre, the girls do not try to make you love them. Yet you will, with lead singer Jenny Beth's demonic wailing and the frankly hypnotic guitar riffs present throughout, plus the crashing drums and destructive basslines that feel like they would destroy your eardrums if you dared play the album too loud. Whilst this year may not seeing a new release confirmed from the girls yet, it's not completely written out that they may return to the studio some point soon, they are notoriously reclusive when it comes to interviews and renowned for spring releases out of the blue, so anything is possible. However what is a given is that they will spend most of their time this year riding off the back of their highly successful debut album and use their Mercury Award nomination to lure larger numbers to their intimidatingly-intense live shows.
