15 Alternative Christmas Songs That Will Still Make You Feel Festive

12. By The Fireside - Ellen & The Escapades

Hailing from Leeds, Ellen & The Escapades were once maddeningly referred to as a female-fronted Mumford & Sons. Please, please, please don€™t let that put you off. They€™re really not that at all €“ they€™re very much cut from the same cloth as the likes of Camera Obscura if this delicious Christmas offering is anything to go by.

It€™s full of your usual festive embellishments and is carried along nicely by enthusiastic chimes and Ellen€™s mellifluous vocal. Lyrically, it€™s pretty standard fare. An effusive and heartfelt shout of €˜Merry Christmas to you€™ is basically the gist of it alongside images of sitting by the fireside with really cold feet and hypothermic cheeks. But it€™s full of warmth and charm, and simply by conjuring comforting thoughts of snuggling up in front of a crackling log fire affords it many clicks of the repeat button.

Chris James Peet says hello. His interests include hoping for the best and sitting in chairs. He much prefers moaning to counting his blessings and suffers fools gladly. He also likes to look out of the window and check what's in the fridge but he hates standing up, dripping taps and reality.
