15 Best Death Metal Bands Ever

13. Bolt Thrower

As the first British band to feature in this list, Coventry's Bolt Thrower spent 30 years dominating the death metal scene both within and beyond the UK. Forming in 1986, Bolt Thrower were initially a grindcore band before they gradually transitioned into death metal over the course of a few albums and EP releases.

Bolt Thrower's first recorded material came in the form of a Peel Sessions EP which was recorded in 1988. However, the EP itself wasn't officially released until 1991 meaning 'In Battle There Is No Law!' is the band's official debut release.

The transition to death metal began in 1989 with the band's second studio album, 'Realm of Chaos'. This album saw a stronger reliance on features such as blast beats and heavier guitar solos, while previous conventional features such as speed and riffs subsided.

Throughout their career, Bolt Thrower released eight studio albums, three EP's, and one live album before they disbanded in 2016. By this point however, the band only had two original members left and had been through four vocalists.

This rapid changing line-up may be one of the reasons why the band's last album was released as early as 2005.
