15 Best Metal Albums Of 2019

10. Gatecreeper - Deserted

Gatecreeper's is a punchy, sweaty, ugly sound of crunchy Swedish death metal guitars, putrid tones, throaty vocals, and the occasional hardcore flourish, and Deserted is its most compelling execution yet.

More content than ever to chug along with mid-tempo stompers, this is a more controlled Gatecreeper. The songwriting is more measured, incorporating Amon Amarth-style melodeath on "From the Ashes" and frontman Chase Mason's Spirit Adrift on "Absence of Light," and while the album still slays, this relative restraint is welcome. It shows there's more to Gatecreeper than outright savagery.
