15 Greatest Queen Songs Of All Time

1. The Show Must Go On

From: Innuendo (1991)

It may not be the band’s most popular tune, or the best one to “rock out” to, as this song is actually pretty depressing. From an artistic standpoint, however, “The Show Must Go On” is the most personal and emotional track Queen ever put together, and one that shouldn’t just be listened to, but experienced.

To understand the brilliance, not to mention importance of this song, however, there needs to be context. Freddie Mercury was diagnosed with AIDS in 1987, a fact that was never disclosed to the public until November 23, 1991, shocking Queen fans worldwide. Mercury would die the very next day, but he didn’t let his final years go to waste, recording as many last songs with the band with every ounce of strength he had left before he became too weak to keep working. And in that time, he recorded the masterpiece that is “The Show Must Go On”.

Released on the Innuendo album in February 1991-nine months before his death-the song tells the story of a musician who knows his time is almost up, but will continue to fight until the very end, knowing the show must go on without him once he’s gone. Since that’s the very battle Freddie Mercury was going through, it makes the song all that more powerful, and as a result we got Queen’s greatest achievement. Freddie Mercury may be gone, but you know what they say...
