Tyler is (the now defunct) Odd Future's brightest star so far. He is simultaneously the group's production wizard, song-writing genius and controversial clown prince. B*st*rd, Goblin, Wolf, Cherry Bomb... The list of exceptional albums put out by this 24 year old rapper is impressive enough without even considering the fact that he has effectively had a hand in pretty much every other OF-related release to date too. His production is out of this world. Creepy, serene, blissful beats that are as much influenced by hip-hop as by Tyler's interest in krautrock and the avant-garde. Although he's pared back some of his experimentation on latest release Cherry Bomb, his first three records are surreal and eerie sonic zones. This atmosphere is intensified by Tyler's predilection towards darkly comic lyrical themes, like the twisted diss-track Yonkers, the stalker anthem She, the serial killer celebrations that permeate B*st*rd and the multiple personalities and alter-egos of Wolf, as well as guest appearances from the likes of Frank Ocean and Kanye West. Tyler is no stranger to controversy. He's been supposedly banned from playing in Australia, and the OF show Loiter Squad that he helms has divided opinion. No doubt, though, that this guy is seriously good.
