15 Incredible New Hip-Hop Stars You Must Hear

6. Earl Sweatshirt

There are two Odd Future representatives on this list (no prizes for guessing who the other one is, hip-hop fans!), and - perhaps controversially - Earl Sweatshirt is slightly lower on the list. Earl is widely regarded to be the most talented of the artists to have emerged from the Odd Future clique, so some would probably place him higher. Wherever he's placed, Earl is a masterful rapper. His three full-lengths, Earl, Doris and I Don't Like Sh*t, I Don't Go Outside, show a young (he's still only 21!) lyricist going from strength-to-strength. They are raw and utterly effortless collections of raps that are completely insular. The production is usually very understated, the lyrics are deeply personal, the records are brief and to the point, and his flow displays an honesty that is rare in contemporary hip-hop. It's probable that Earl will eventually overtake the popularity of Odd Future's most infamous member, Tyler (featured later). At the moment he's still slightly in the shadow of the group's star, but he's gaining. He's certainly got the gifts to become Odd Future's biggest export.
