3. Good Cover Versions Of Their Songs Are A Rare But Welcome Treat
When the really good artists choose to do a cover song, they prefer to tackle songs that are a little unusual because they present the biggest challenges. It's more interesting for the artist and more interesting for the listener. But for the most part, it appears Modest Mouse is almost too challenging to take on. Save for various, stripped-down versions of "Float On," there's a conspicuous absence of Modest Mouse covers, ahem, floating around out there. (I had to.) That tends to make it all the more impressive when someone not only performs an homage to the ban, but does an entire album full of them and does a great job with them. Two separate artists, experimental indie band Sun Kil Moon and folk singer-songwriter Joshua James, decided to go all in on their love of Modest Mouse, releasing entire albums devoted to MM covers. And save for one song, "Dramamine," there's no overlap between the two albums, proving that Modest Mouse means a lot of different things to a lot of different people.
