10. He Ran The Coolest Celebrity Drinking Club Of The 1970s
It's highly unfashionable to consider competitive binge-drinking and substance abuse cool, these days. However, if anyone suffering under the cycle of irresponsibility, addiction and dipsomania could ever be considered cool, it's the Hollywood Vampires. That's the name Alice gave to his coterie of Los Angeles party animals back in the 1970s. The core membership comprised Alice himself, The Who's legendarily decadent drummer Keith Moon, former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, former Monkees drummer and singer Mickey Dolenz (I'm seeing a pattern here), and singer/songwriter Harry Nilsson. Guest membership was reserved for visiting fellows John Lennon, John Belushi and Marc Bolan, amongst others... but Alice was the president of the club, the big hitter. The Hollywood Vampires had their own little nook at the Rainbow Bar & Grill in West Hollywood, and today a plaque commemorates their debauched antics at the historic restaurant.
