20 Greatest Empowering Break-Up Songs

6. You Oughta Know - Alanis Morrissette

The History: This song was a track on Morissette's Jagged Little Pill album. She wrote the song with Glen Ballard. It did pretty well on the charts, peaking at number 22 in Canada, twenty two in the UK, and number one on the Billboard Alternative chart in the US. It won a Grammy for Best Rock Song and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance in 1996. VH1 ranked the song number 12 in the €œTop 100 Songs of the '90s€ special.

While there's a lot of speculation as to who the song is about, Morrrissette is mum, saying in an interview with the Vancover Sun, "€œWell, I've never talked about who my songs were about and I won't, because when I write them they're written for the sake of personal expression.€"

Why It's Great: This song is raw in a totally awesome way. Sometimes before we move on, there's a period where we're just really angry at our ex. It's powerful because Morrisette puts to music all the thoughts we might have about an ex that we wouldn't dare say to their face.
