3. The God That Failed Is About Hetfield's Mother

Although James Hetfield had been pulling lyrical subject matter from within for years prior, it's often thought the really personal stuff didn't emerge until the likes of Bleeding Me on Load.

However the Black Album's latter-half track 'The God That Failed' is inspired by his Christian Scientist mother's affliction with cancer, which she refused treatment for, placing all hope in faith itself.

Sadly she slowly passed away, becoming the inspiration for a number of Hetfield's most introspective tracks.
