19. MK Ultra
http://youtu.be/4CkApmhVpdg This is one of Matt's barmy conspiracy theory moments, about the actually quite serious topic of mind control - Project MKUltra being the code name of an illegal U.S. government human research operation. But anyway, onto the music. This is 'The Resistance''s most dynamic moment, containing a classic guitar mosh-out to round the song off. To signpost that this is off their fifth album and not 'Origin Of Symmetry' for example, in the background we have garbled vocals and dramatic sounding synths (not pianos anymore). Whether this shift in instrumental palette is a good or bad thing is down to your own personal taste, but for the driving bass/wailing vocal/Rage Against The Machine riffing of the song's climax alone, this song deserves to make the list. 18. Resistance
http://youtu.be/TPE9uSFFxrI The title track of Muse's fifth album was a sweeping slice of driving operatic rock complete with Queen-aping "could be wrong" backing vocals from Chris. Even the nod towards cheesy 90s trance in the intro's piano riff doesn't derail this song. The lyrics again show complete paranoia, yet defiance in the solidity of love against all life's evils. The chorus resembles a more polished and restrained 'Plug In Baby', which isn't a bad thing in the context of the recording. The track does end rather abruptly as we hear Muse racing off into the sunset (or more likely the sun itself considering the band lives in space) leaving us with the eerie synth that it originally brought to the table. Compared to the tepid opening track, 'Uprising' this really got the album moving.
