5 Crushingly Sad Songs You've Never Heard

3. Johnny Hobo And The Freight Trains - Whiskey Is My Kind Of Lullaby

I imagine that Pat "the Bunny" has lived through everything he howls about in this song. I know that he has had a serious drug problem from which I believe he has now recovered. He currently (to the best of my knowledge) fronts a band called Ramshackle Glory, and writes more redemptive songs about how he overcame his struggles. This songs finds Pat in the midst of his drug habit. It's bleak, but not in a romanticised, tortured artist kind of way. It's horrible, desolate, raw and lonely. This is not a mainstream kind of sad song. This is what Requiem for a Dream is to a Talk to Frank advert; what Bill Hicks is to Michael Mcintyre. In short, it's brutal. Bleakest moment - "As we drive past/ The last exist to home/I am waving goodbye/ And I might be sleeping in a ditch tonight/ But it's alright/Cause whiskey is my kind of lullaby".
