5 Reasons Katy Perry Is The Reigning Queen Of Pop
1. Willingness To Evolve
Madonna, Elton John, David Bowie, all huge stars that have stood the test of time. The secret to their success? Evolution. The ability to adapt and change their act of style to fit the current cutting edge.
Yes, publicists and PR play a part, but it is the individuals willingness to not only make the changes but make them believable, natural and realistic. Perry started off her music career as Christian songstress Katy Hudson (her birth name which she later changed to avoid comparison with the actress of the same surname). When dropped from her label, she evolved her style into an almost pop-rock princess singing about controversial topics that got her noticed; kissing girls, weddings in Vegas and even one album track Ur So Gay courted controversy, but it put her on the map.
Her second album saw a more raunchy but bubblegum pop feel that fell comfortably in-line with some of that summer's biggest tracks, and her third album features a range of tunes that are more acclimatised to today's dance genres, especially her latest single Dark Horse which features a vetted mellow dubstep bassline. Her style has too shown signs of evolution, and whilst this is commonplace for any pop star, it is the sincerity and execution that makes the looks and outfits work. Even her choice in men seems to be a sign of her evolving and maturing as a young woman, with Perry always staying on the safe side of the cutting edge, but still close enough to make us all wonder what would happen if she goes that little bit further.
The next 18 months may play out in one of two ways for Perry. It is undeniable she is here to stay, a headline act in her own right and with no noticeable sign of a transition into screen, Perry has the opportunity to monopolise the Queen of Pop label away from others and cement herself as one of the all-time greats. With arguably another wave of bubblegum teen pop-stars just around the corner, Katy (who is nearly 30) has the maturity and experience to outlast the younger generation alongside a back catalogue that is up there with any female pop-star.
With regular singles hitting high levels in the charts, entertaining television appearances and an image that is both hot and ever-evolving, Katy Perry is undoubtedly the reigning queen of pop.
