7 Best Female Musicians To Debut In the Last 5 Years

2. Birdy

Birdy Like our previous entry, Birdy is teeming with undeniable talent. Birdy, however, has had her share of success. In 2008 Birdy - also known as Jasmine Van den Bogaerde - won a talent competition called Open Mic UK against thousands of older and more experienced competitors. Birdy was only twelve years old at the time, and performed a song she had written herself - a remarkable talent for someone her age. In January 2011 - at the young age of fourteen - Birdy released a cover of Bon Iver's hit Skinny Love. Accompanying her tender vocals was her exquisite and skillful piano playing. Later in November that same year Birdy released her debut album - simply titled Birdy - which featured her hit cover of Skinny Love as well as a number of other cover tracks and one original song. Birdy continued to wow fans and critics alike with her rendition of The Xx's Shelter and Cherry Ghost's People Help the People all at the age of fifteen. At the age of sixteen she performed at the 2012 Summer Paralympic Games. Birdy has continued to make great music with sophomore album Fire Within released earlier this year. Unlike her previous album this one showcases not only her musical talents but her writing skills as well being her first album to contain all original tracks. She has contributed her music to film soundtracks such as the Hunger Games and Brave and earned herself many accolades in the process. Unfortunately, Birdy still hasn't received the attention she deserves but has continued to accomplish more than most her age. We can only hope with time that others will come to appreciate this remarkable young talent.
