8 Great Albums That Are Incredibly Top Heavy With Their Best Songs
2. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Black Sabbath are iconic, with some even considering their initial album the first ever Heavy Metal album. Their follow-up attempt did not slow down their quality one bit.
'War Pigs' is an epic, multi-layered, anti-Vietnam War song that contains some wicked wordplay and devilishly good guitar work, with the middle section an opera of clashing, grunting riffs, before the quiet, marching verses cut you back to reality.
'Paranoid' is a fast-paced headbanger with an almost cruelly catchy beat, while 'Iron Man' is the stomping anthem it's always been even before Marvel cracked it back into the mainstream. 'Planet Caravan' also showed the band could also do very quiet and mature tunes too, and do them damn well.
It's an absolute shame then that the rest of the album simply feels like your standard metal album. There's absolutely nothing bad here, in fact, 'Fairies Wear Boots' has some excellent key changes and high points, but nothing stands out as something no other band could have created.
It's only eight songs, but the first half is some of the most recognizable riffs in heavy metal. The fact the first four songs top Black Sabbath's Spotify with hundreds of millions of plays while the other struggles to get over the ten million marks speaks volumes.
