8 Musicians Who Were Busted For Exposing Themselves On Stage

The expression “sex, drugs, and rock and roll” was popularized by new wave artist Ian Dury in 1977, when he released a song with a similar name. Since then, the three vices have been tightly linked and become synonymous with the excesses of the music industry.

Now we expect our rock stars to behave outrageously, especially when they're on stage. As a paying member of the audience, we expect to be reimbursed with a wild spectacle and hopefully, if it's not too much trouble, a little bit of extra "titillation."

Because dammit, we really love sex. And we love it involves a famous person.

But sometimes musicians can get into hot water for crossing the threshold that separates sexual suggestion from full-on indecency. It's one thing to flaunt your sexuality, it's quite another to whip it out and hold it in your hand.

These musicians didn't get the memo about keeping it in their pants while out in public. Or they thought they could get away with a little indecent exposure as long as the light show was up to par. Either way, their naughty bits got them into all kinds of trouble.

Anyone unfortunate enough to sit through a mediocre Green Day concert will have no difficulty understanding whether or not the show lived up to frontman Billie Joe Armstrong’s standards, as he’s been prone to dropping his trousers and mooning the crowd during so-so performances.

That method of communicating with the fans came back to bite him in 1995, when Armstrong flashed his Dookie-maker at a show in Milwaukee. Rather than storm the stage to shut down the concert mid-pantsing, police officers waited until the band had finished their encore to get involved, allegedly to prevent a riot.

But after wrapping up their (evidently lukewarm) set, Milwaukee’s Finest were on hand to escort Armstrong to the police station, where he was cited for indecent exposure.

According to Lt. Thomas Christopher, the main reason they took action was because he’d exposed himself to so many people - attendance was roughly 6,000 strong - “including people as young as ten.”

Fortunately for Billie Joe, he’d written a check that his butt could, in fact, cash, and was released on bail for the meager sum of $141.85.
