9 Famous Band Logos And What They Really Mean

3. Iron Maiden's Typeface Is From A 70s Sci-Fi Film

The typeface for the Iron Maiden logo is one of the most well-known typefaces in music history, bold red text outlined with thick white lines. The logo was intended to evoke a sharp, brutal and somewhat medieval aesthetic, much like the band's actual music. It first appeared on their 1979 debut EP titled The Soundhouse Tapes and has appeared on every release since. The typeface itself has a notable origin. It first appeared on Vic Fair's poster design for the 1976 science fiction filmed The Man Who Fell To Earth. It's curious because the band have much more in common with gritty fantasy than clean, chromatic sci-fi, yet the text absolutely fits the nature of the band.
