9 Geeky Musicians You’ve Never Heard Of

3. Metal Fortress

As his name suggests, Metal Fortress began his work based around heavy metal reworks of the Team Fortress 2 soundtrack.

As a standalone score this soundtrack bleeds style, but when reworked in metal it becomes even more impressive. Originally composed for orchestra, it gives us a selection of different tempos and styles, ranging from war drums to pseudo-Germanic sections, the kind of stylised work that was begging for a creative metal cover.

Metal fortress did just that, and over time his skill has been even more evident. Taking a recent swing closer to electro and techno-bass, he takes a set of now 13 year old tracks and makes them feel up to date.

Having branched out into even more geeky niches, covering retro games and even some tracks designed for RPG sessions, the quality of his music only continues to impress.

My passion for all things Sci Fi goes back to my earliest days, when old VHS copies of Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet gripped my tiny mind with their big, noisy vehicles and terrifying puppets. I'd like to say my taste got more refined over the years, but between the Warhammer, Space Dandy and niche Star Wars EU books, perhaps it just got broader. I've enjoyed games of all calibre since I figured out that dice weren't just for eating, and have written prose ever since I was left unsupervised with some crayons next to a white wall. I got away with it by calling it "schoolwork" for as long as I could, and university helped me keep the charade going a while longer. Since my work began to get published, it's made all those long hours repainting the walls seem worth it.
