7. Cry A River

It's largely agreed that Fortress is the heaviest album that Alter Bridge have ever come out with. A smart move to go in a new direction after the unparalleled ABIII, the album's more overtly metal tone allows for some ultra shreddy electric guitar wizardry.

'Cry a River' shows this new style immediately with a thunderous intro riff in 5/4 time. When it comes to the solo, which is, once again, right before the outro, there's quite an evolution about the playing over its 30-secondish runtime.

At first, the solo starts out lyrical and melodious, going through a few leaping sweeps while maintaining a kind of anthemic ring-out. After that, it just keeps getting more and more energetic, building until the climactic lead-in to the outro section, which is pure lightspeed finger fretting all the way.

You may be fooled into thinking you can conquer this solo on first listen. But then you get three quarters in, and...
